Lakewood Township municipal employees have formed a special “Lakewood Squad” fundraising team for the upcoming “2025 New Jersey More Than Pink Walk,” slated for Sunday, October 5 at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson.
The “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” walkathon will support the providing of vital resources for breast cancer patients. The organization has invested over $1.1 billion plus towards research for a cure. The foundation organizes similar walkathons around the nation, which serve as a key fundraising source in its continuous medical research efforts.
For Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles, this effort on the part of municipal employees strikes a uniquely personal chord. The Mayor, his two parents, and two sisters all battled and ultimately beat cancer. On the other hand, sadly, within recent months the Mayor saw three close friends lose their battles with the dreaded illness, leaving a painful void in the lives of their families and friends.
“The support of friends, family, our communities, and medical professionals were critical to our recoveries,” Mayor Coles reflected. “We must do whatever we can to raise awareness of the need for regular screenings, fund research to end this scourge, and support patients and their families as well as the families of those unfortunately no longer with us. I'm proud to help lead Lakewood Township's effort in this battle.”
Trish Komsa, Lakewood Township’s COO and Director of Human Resources, noted that the “Lakewood Squad” is a powerful testament to the character and camaraderie of Township employees, as well as the Township’s robust commitment to health and wellness.
“Forming a team for the Susan G. Komen Walk is a reflection of who we are at Lakewood Township—not just colleagues, but a community that shows up for one another,” said Komsa. “It’s a chance to step outside the office and walk side by side fora cause that touches so many lives. Together, we honor, support, and inspire—strengthening the bonds that bring us together every day.”
