Governor Delivers State of State Address

On Tuesday, January 9, Governor Murphy delivered the 2024 State of State Address “Making New Jersey More Affordable for More Families.” The speech noted the State’s successes and areas that need continued work. In his address, the Governor noted that “together, we have lived up to our promise to build a state that is not just stronger or fairer. We are building a state that is stronger and fairer.”

The Governor added, “as we begin a new legislative session, let us unite together to continue addressing the biggest challenge facing our families: the cost of living is too high.” The Governor highlighted that the administration has doubled the growth of the state’s economy, created nearly 2,000 jobs, enacted 20 new tax cuts for middle-class families and seniors, and created the ANCHOR property tax relief program.

Of municipal interest, the Governor stated his commitment to eliminating the state’s shortage of affordable housing with the aim of building new housing options. The Governor also noted that he looks forward to signing the affordable housing bill from Senate President Scutari, Assembly Speaker Coughlin, Senator Singleton, and Assemblywoman Lopez. “Our shared vision is simple. Ensuring that everyone raising a family in New Jersey has a safe, affordable place to call home.”

In his speech, Governor Murphy spoke on how the State will be making its four full pension payments, his support for same-day voter registration, and permitting 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in local school board elections.
