Urban Enterprise Zones (UEZs) have been the lynchpin of investment and economic growth throughout New Jersey for decades. For more than 30 years, this statewide program has enabled millions of dollars to be leveraged through public/private partnerships and urban centers to flourish. Businesses, large and small, continue to excel, expand, and thrive, thanks in great part to the benefits offered through the Urban Enterprise Zone program.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, business owners have faced countless unprecedented challenges. Now, the remnants of Tropical Storms Henri and Ida have imposed another burden on New Jersey businesses who have seen their buildings wrecked, facilities flooded, and inventory destroyed.

Governor Phil Murphy has made it a top priority to support communities and businesses that have been impacted by the economic and health challenges the pandemic and these extreme weather events have created. As the State’s primary agency dedicated to driving sustainable, equitable economic growth, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has led New Jersey’s economic response to COVID-19 and is administering a new, $10 million Henri/Ida Business Assistance Grant Program.

Why are the New Jersey Department of Transportation Office of Maritime Resources, the United States Army of Corps Engineers (USACE) Operations Unit, and local maritime communities working tirelessly to restore navigable water depths within the state, federal and local waterways throughout the state? And, if so many resources are being expended in this effort, how can we best leverage this work to build storm resiliency and reduce nuisance flooding in our coastal communities?
