Comment Period for Police Licensing Rules Closing Soon

The comment period for rules proposed by the New Jersey Police Training Commission to implement the new statewide police licensing program ends on June 16. The League intends to submit comments and is interested in hearing feedback from our members.

Last summer, Governor Murphy signed P.L. 2022, c. 65, which establishes a police licensing program for all New Jersey law enforcement officers. This new law tasked the Police Training Commission with adopting rules related to the licensing of police officers within the state.

The Police Training Commission published proposed new rules and amendments in the New Jersey Register on April 17, 2023, seeking public comment. The proposed rules and amendments include provisions related to an officer’s physical conditioning, education, and clinical training for initial licensing as well as requirements for continued training and certification upon employment.

The League is reviewing the rule proposal and amendments and anticipates commenting prior to the June 16 due date. Should you submit comments, the League is asking that you kindly forward a copy to League Associate General Counsel, Frank Marshall at
