On March 3, the Department of Environmental Protection (Department), Division of Watershed Protection and Restoration, announced a Stormwater Assistance Grant that will be ongoing until the end of this year. The funding will help New Jersey’s municipalities improve MS4 Stormwater programs in compliance with the 2023 Tier A MS4 Permit renewal, which was issued late last year and went into effect on January 1, 2023.
The Department aims to eliminate or minimize rain/snow runoff exposure while providing best management practices through the New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NJPDES). This system also oversees the program for entities that operate small municipal storm systems, better known as MS4. Under this program, municipalities must secure a permit under one of the two tiers (A or B).
The 101 former Tier B municipalities that were notified they were reassigned to Tier A as of July 01, 2022, are eligible for this grant. Additionally, the 456 Tier A municipalities that were assigned to Tier A prior to July 1, 2022, are also eligible for this funding. The municipalities are encouraged to apply earlier than later, as participants will be announced on a rolling basis. Please click here to see a list of municipalities by tier.
Former Tier Bs in Appendix A must submit a complete Tier A MS4 Permit and Grant Application to stormwatermanager@dep.nj.gov.
Original Tier, A permittees in Appendix A, must submit a complete Orginal Tier A MS4 Permit and Grant Application to stormwatermanager@dep.nj.gov.
*The deadline to make an application for this grant is December 31, 2023.
