NLC Urges Congress to Pass Rail Safety Legislation

Earlier this week, the National League of Cities (NLC), the League’s federal partner, hosted a webinar with Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell (WA), and Senators Sherrod Brown (OH) and J.D. Vance (OH) who, in light of the train derailment and chemical spill in East Palestine, OH, and the average 1,000 train derailments annually, are advocating for the passage of S.576 - Railway Safety Act of 2023. The Senate Commerce Committee is likely to consider the measure in the next month, though a vote has not yet been scheduled. In a closely divided Senate, municipal advocacy is vital to passage of this important measure.

We urge you to reach out to Senator Menendez and Senator Booker and urge them to support the Railway Safety Act.
