[ARCHIVED] Bipartisan Governors Address Regional Electricity Grid Challenges

Governor Phil Murphy joined a group of bipartisan governors in signing on to the PJM Governors’ Collaborative to increase state and consumer representation with the grid operator, PJM, and address long-term issues with electricity affordability and grid reliability. The announcement comes after a technical conference held in Philadelphia .

PJM is the largest power grid operator in the United States, serving 65 million customers from Illinois to New Jersey.  For the first time, a day-long technical conference with 13 governors convened to address PJM cost increases .

PJM had undergone a leadership transition and much of the conference was aimed at sustaining and improving an outdated system. Governor Murphy along with other state Governors expressed concern with double digit rate hikes and stabilizing the market and called on the grid operator to make immediate changes to increase involvement with states, improve forecasting, address affordability, enhance deliverability, implement reforms for the future, and approve shovel-ready projects that promote clean energy.

The efforts outlined in the collaborative’s Statement of Intent include continuing to come together to strategize and develop joint positions on PJM issues, coordinating engagement on issues impacting states at PJM and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as well as promoting alignment of states’ efforts to maximize impact.

In addition to Governor Murphy, signatories of the new collaborative include Delaware Governor Matt Meyer , Indiana Governor Mike Braun , Ohio Governor Mike DeWine , Tennessee Governor Bill Lee , Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin , Maryland Governor Wes Moore , Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer , North Carolina Governor Josh Stein , Illinois Governor JB Pritzker , and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro .

The League will continue to provide updates as necessary.
