On July 22, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) announced the Urban Heat Island Mitigation Program to help municipalities combat extreme heat and reduce energy burdens in overburdened communities. This grant offers funding across three tiers—from large-scale green infrastructure projects to micro-climate cooling solutions like shaded bus stops and community gardens.
NJBPU has provided an update noting that municipalities interested in applying must inquire about the program by contacting community.energy@bpu.nj.gov. This initial step is required to begin the application process.
Application Deadline: The deadline is mid December, and all proposed projects must be located on public or publicly accessible land and align with the state’s climate resilience goals.
