We previously noted that S-1408, which authorizes conversion of certain office parks and retail centers to mixed-use developments, was to be considered by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee on January 30. The bill was pulled from committee’s agenda and not considered by the committee.
The League has spoken to the sponsor about alternatives to the legislation to facilitate the redevelopment and repurposing of vacant or abandoned commercial properties, sometimes referred to as “stranded assets” while not preempting local discretion.
We are hopeful to advance an alternative, but in the meantime and if you have not done so already, we ask that you review S-1408 and consider reaching out to your legislators and to the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee to express concerns with this attempt to preempt local zoning.
