Last week, the New Jersey State Future of Work Task Force issued its report. The Future of Work Task Force was established by Executive Order 41 in 2018 by Governor Phil Murphy to evaluate how technological advancements will shape the future of New Jersey’s economy and workforce.

The principle recommendations of the report focus on Investing in Workers, Empowering Workers, and Protecting Workers as a result of automation and advances in technology. 

The areas of interest to municipalities include recommendations for lifelong learning and worker training; ensuring that employees are not misclassified in their work assignments; promote workers’ rights to organize; and creation of a portable benefits package that employees can take from job to another. 

The report suggests an interagency data-sharing system for permitting modernization. It is unclear whether that would include municipal working papers for youth employment. 

There is no specific funding mechanism for any of these proposals.   

Membership of the Task Force includes national technology experts, academics, labor leaders, think tank members, as well as current and former state and national government officials.
